(A very quick post to say Happy New Year 2025.)
Just like the awful ‘DAILY HISTORY PICTURZ’ pages that pop on on Facepalm full of these kinds of ‘old’ pictures, but essentially make up the context by using the village idiot version of AI, I don’t know exactly when or where this is from, but I have been led to believe this is not quite what it seems (Gasp from readers!).
You might very well think that this was taken;
- In the United States of America.
- In use / in situ.
- (Bizarrely, in the case of one terrible History Picz website) ‘in the 1930s’).
Instead I’ve been lead to believe it’s at the Earls Court 1960 Vending Machine exhibition and was designed to woo US buyers as a ‘look what we can do for you’ piece, but was never made commercially, because no-one wanted it to be.
In a similar vein, here’s another machine that proved something could be done, but only if you could hire a small crane at the same time;
A really laudable attempt at an early multi-product vending machine, but they got it all wrong in terms of size and complexity (let’s assume, after all never mind the selection, feel the depth) which must have taken a day or two just to set up at the exhibition. In the event of a jam, I assume the engineer had to climb inside of it with a ball of string just in case, leaving a note to say how long they would be?
If this looks familiar, it’s because it isn’t, but an attempt was made to introduce machines like these (no mixers mind!) into Ireland in the 1970s. The idea being that although bar staff were not allowed to serve alcohol during the final ‘drinking up’ time, no one said anything about a machine, eh? Well, sadly that didn’t wash and the machines were probably the biggest waste of time ever for manufacturer Barber-Weston (of Weston-super-Mare). We’ve featured this machine before in our ‘Knowledge Base’ that sadly is lacking a lot of knowledge still, but we will get there!
What I can now show you is a video of the NIGHTENDER… IN ACTION!
(Please note that this video is hosted directly at YouTube on another channel & I have no control over the ‘featured’ videos that may appear after the Nightender one has finished!)
Happy New Year!
